An Act 537 Sewage Facilities Plan update has been submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection proposing an upgrade to the North and South Shenango Joint Municipal Authority's existing wastewater treatment plant in response to hydraulic overload issues resulting from peak wet weather events. The upgrade project will construct additional average day and peak day capacity to increase the average day design capacity to 1.73 MGD and the peak day capacity to 3.2 MGD.

The upgrade will involve the conversion of one of the existing three process units to a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), which will treat peak flows. The remaining two process units will be converted to additional aeration and disinfection. A new aerobic digester will be constructed adjacent to the existing plant. The upgrade will mitigate the hydraulic overload issues at the plant and address existing and projected sewage flows. There are potential future flows from West Shenango Township, Pymatuning State Park and the Greentree/Colonial Estates Allotment within the service area.

The project is estimated to cost approximately three million dollars. The NSSJMA secured funding for the project by refunding existing bond debt and issuing additional bonds in 2012. The project is expected to begin late summer of 2013.
